Macon, Ga. – Competing at the Penn Relays, Campbell’s Alicia Valtin
captured a fourth place finish in the steeplechase and widened the gap between
herself and the rest of the conference in the event en route to being named
Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week, league officials announced today.
Valtin, a senior from Sanford, N.C., broke her own school record by over nine
seconds as she finished the steeplechase with a time of 10:24.72. Her time is
currently 18th best in the nation and 10th best in the East Region. Along with
breaking a school record and moving up in the national standings in the event,
Valtin’s time extended her lead over the rest of the Atlantic Sun. The
gap between Valtin and the rest of the A-Sun is over 78 seconds.
The award is the second for Valtin this outdoor season and her fourth overall.
She was also honored during the 2006 indoor season and earned her first AOTW
honor for track and field during the 2005 outdoor season. Along with her four
track and field AOTW awards, Valtin has also been tabbed the A-Sun’s Athlete
of the Week five times over the past two season’s of cross country. In
all, Valtin has been honored as an A-Sun AOTW nine times.
The Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week is announced every Wednesday during the
2007 track season.
The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell,
ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and
Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.
