MACON, Ga. – Mercer’s Kelly Blount amassed a perfect 4-0 mark last week with all four victories coming on the road, and ran her doubles winning streak to six consecutive matches. On Friday, she picked up her second career Player of the Week honor the conference office announced. This is the first such honor for Blount since her sophomore season in 2006.
Blount was undefeated last weekend, winning four road matches in two days en route to pushing Mercer’s record to 5-3 on the season. She helped lead Mercer past Western Carolina, 5-2, on Saturday, then helped guide the Bears to a 5-2 win at Appalachian State on Sunday. The native of Martinez, Ga., claimed a straight-set, 6-10, 6-1 win at the No. 6 slot past Emily Turke of WCU and rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Appalachian State’s Caroline Mauch. She has teamed with fellow senior Karen Bellman to win six consecutive doubles matches. The lone loss suffered by the duo cam at No. 27 ranked Auburn to open the season. Blount and Bellman took an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over WCU’s Emily Turke and Susana Sjokvist on Saturday, then blanked APSU’s Mallory Cook and Lindsay King, 8-0, at No. 3 on Sunday.
