JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2010) – After starting the season out with two wins, including a victory over No. 57 Georgia State, the ETSU women’s tennis team moved into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings this week at No. 75.
Head coach Steve Broooks’ squad earned victories over defending Ohio Valley Conference Champion Eastern Kentucky January 23, and the nationally ranked Panthers two weeks ago inside the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club.
In their two close road losses at No. 10 Tennessee (4-3) and No. 61 Virginia Tech (5-2), the Lady Bucs played tough against both regional rivals. Against the Lady Vols, ETSU fought back from a 3-0 deficit to pull within one point of a win, while against Virginia Tech the Lady Bucs held an early 2-1 lead before the home-court Hokies rallied for the victory.
“It’s very rewarding for the girls to be ranked 75th,” said Brooks. “One of our goals this season was to get nationally ranked. Now that we’ve reached this milestone, hopefully we can get back to work in practice and achieve even more.”
