KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw Sate advanced to the Atlantic Sun Women’s Soccer Championship final with a dramatic overtime victory on Thursday at the KSU Soccer Complex.
Caitlin Dingle found the net in the 96th minute of play to secure the Owls a spot in the A-Sun Championship final at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday against theBruins. Dingle headed the ball past Jacksonville goalkeeper Alexa Rooney off a brilliant cross from Thais Gibson.
The Owls placed tremendous pressure on the Dolphins in the second half and in overtime. Kennesaw State outshot Jacksonville, 13-5, following halftime and earned 10 corner kicks while the Dolphins did not earn one corner following the halftime whistle.
Kennesaw State controlled the pace of the match in the second half with several solid scoring chances but Jacksonville’s Alexa Rooney made key stops to keep the Dolphins even with the Owls. Jacksonville midfielder Jessica Hurtado fired a free kick from 30 yards out in the 71st minute, but the shot sailed inches high of the net.
The Owls’ Lisa Hensley had an excellent opportunity in the second half with a chip shot that went over the head of Kennesaw State’s Staci Pugh that went just wide of the net. Sian Senior kept the match even in the 63rd minute when Maylee Attin-Johnson headed a shot on net that would have found the back if the junior defender had not been holding the goal line to deflect the ball away.
The two teams played even in the first half with both teams finding several chances on the offense end for both teams. The win by Kennesaw State ends Jacksonville’s conference-leading nine game unbeaten streak.
