Jacksonville upends ETSU in opening match

KENNESAW, Ga. - Ninety minutes was not enough to settle the first match of the 2008 Atlantic Sun Tournament, as the Jacksonville women's soccer team battled ETSU to a 1-1, draw Wednesday afternoon. The Dolphins took the Bucs, 5-4 in penalty kicks in the first quarterfinal game of the 15th Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Championship on Wednesday at the Kennesaw State Soccer Complex.
After 110 minutes of play, the opening game was decided by Alexa Rooney's final save blocking ETSU's final penalty kick.
At 60:21 in the second half, Jacksonville's Jelena Vrecelj used a deflection off an ETSU player to dribble around the goalkeeper and score one for the Dolphins.
With less than nine minutes to go ETSU's Kelly Brinkman sent a quick pass to Terri Miller to equal up the score,1-1. Miller attempted two shots on goal before finally making it in.
The first half saw only 11 total shots, with three coming from second-team All-Atlantic Sun forward Jordan Monty. The Bucs fought a hard battle with a close shot coming from Miller towards the end of the first half.
The fourth-seeded team has outlasted the fifth-seeded team seven out of the last 10 times. Fans can catch Jacksonville tomorrow when they face the regular season champions, the Mercer Bears at 4:00 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Complex.
The Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Championship continues with No. 3 Belmont taking on No. 6 Stetson in the second quarterfinal game.
