MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team picked up a come-from-behind 3-2 victory against Belmont at Bear Field. With the win, the Bears improve to 5-1 in the Atlantic Sun and stand just one game back from conference-leading Kennesaw State (6-0 A-Sun).
Mercer freshman Lauren Johnson sparked the Bears’ offense early scoring her first collegiate goal just three minutes into the game. A pass by sophomore Jenny Niemeier set up Johnson for the goal through the lower left corner of the goal.
Belmont answered twenty minutes later as Erica Carter put in rebounded goal from fifteen feet away to tie the game at 1-1.
The Bruins took the lead off an own goal 30 minutes into the second period. Anna Holt set up for a corner kick and a scramble by the net resulted in the goal for the Bruins to give them the 2-1 lead.
The Bears did relinquish lead as sophomore Stefani Campbell tied the match with a goal off a penalty kick with 16 minutes remaining in the second period.
A punt by sophomore goalkeeper Jean Worts at the 83 minute mark resulted in a shot by senior Catie Marshalek from five yards out, which would be the game-winning-goal.
