FGCU Wins Battle Over Mercer to Claim A-Sun Season Title

MACON, Ga. – Florida Gulf Coast University claimed the Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer regular season championship on Sunday, as the league completed regular season play and set its seedings for the upcoming championship that begins on Saturday, October 27th.

The Eagles 1-0 victory over Mercer at home awarded them the three points they needed to take the title with a total of 22 points just ahead of the Bears who finished No. 2 in the conference with 20 points. FGCU's claim to the regular season title marks the first time since University of Central Florida 1997-1999 seasons that a team has earned at least a share of three consecutive titles.

FGCU (7-1-1, 12-3-3) heads into the championship as the No.1 seed, followed by Mercer (6-1-2, 12-4-3) as the No. 2 and Kennesaw State (6-2-1, 10-7-1) as the No. 3. The six-team field is completed by ETSU (6-3-0, 12-5-0) at No. 4, No. 5 Jacksonville (5-2-2, 8-6-3), and No. 6 North Florida (5-3-1, 7-9-2).

Kennesaw State and ETSU will host the first round games of the 2012 women's soccer championship, as the Owls will face North Florida and the Buccaneers face Jacksonville on October 27th. Times for the games will be set by the conference office on Monday. Semifinal games will be played on November 2nd, as top seed Eagles will take on the winner of the Bucs/Dolphins match-up and Mercer takes on the winner of the Owls/Osprey game at the FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
