This Week in Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer: Aug. 22nd

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

MACON, Ga. - Seventeen women's soccer contests are scheduled for play this week including nine on Atlantic Sun turf. The A-Sun will be looking for its first win against a 2011 NCAA Tournament participant.

Mercer and Jacksonville take on South Carolina, FGCU hosts Illinois State in the Embassy Suites Classic and ETSU welcomes Radford to Johnson City. A-Sun teams are 0-3 after the first week of play vs. 2011 NCAA Tournament teams.

A-Sun Women's Soccer Weekly Notes (#ASunWSoc):
  • ETSU sits atop the A-Sun standings with a 2-0 record. The last time the Buccaneers opened the season with two wins was 2008.
  • Northern Kentucky (1-0) is vying to become the fourth team in A-Sun history to own a winning record in their first season with the league. Kennesaw State owns the best mark for a program’s debut with the A-Sun at 13-4-1 in 2005. FGCU (11-7; 2007) and Campbell (10-9; 1994) also achieved the feat. Jacksonville and North Florida both owned .500 records in their first years in the league.
  • Lipscomb goalkeeper Erin Zerio has 249 career saves, which puts her only 28 away from the 15th-most in A-Sun history. The senior keeper has averaged 80 saves for her first three seasons and could finish as high as 11th-best all-time if she stays on that average in 2012.
  • FGCU’s Ashley Ciesielczyk added two assists to her career total in a 7-0 rout of Lynn in the season opener. Her career total of 20 is now only six away from moving her into a tie eighth-best career mark in A-Sun history.
  • Four contests in the opening week went into extra periods as A-Sun teams recorded a 3-0-1 mark in overtime matches. ETSU, Jacksonville and USC Upstate all tallied wins, while Mercer notched a tie with Southern Miss. In 2011, the A-Sun was only 5-6-6 in overtime matches in non-conference play including four ties to start the season.
  • All three of the new A-Sun women’s soccer head coaches earned wins in the opening weekend with Lipscomb’s Kevin O’Brien and USC Upstate’s Abby Minihan taking wins on Friday and Mercer’s Tony Economopoulos picking his up on Sunday.
  • Kennesaw State’s Danielle Gray picked up the A-Sun Player of the Week honors after recording three goals and two assists in a 9-0 victory vs. Alabama A&M. Her eight-point outing is the most in the A-Sun since Stetson’s Heather Berg tallied 10 on Oct. 25th, 2009.
  • The Defensive Player of the Week went to ETSU’s Sierra Campbell after the freshman goalkeeper went 2-0 in the opening weekend and stopped 14 shots on frame vs. UNC Asheville. The 14 saves is the most by an A-Sun keeper since Oct. 23, 2010 when Lipscomb’s Erin Zerio totaled the same number.
  • Kennesaw State’s Katrina Frost and FGCU’s Ashley Ciesielczyk gained ground on the A-Sun active career points list in the opening weekend. Frost tallied two goals and an assist to push her two-year point total to 29 (5th-best), while Ciesielczyk’s two assists tied her for second-best with UNF’s Michelle Larrinaga and Carolina Lencina at 32. The Ospreys’ Lauren Hopfensperger still is in the lead at 33.
