Woods Finds Net Twice in GWU's 2-0 Win Over Winthrop

BOILING SPRINGS – Brittany Woods blasted two shots past Winthrop’s Dimitra Poulos in less than a minute and Corinne Razem netted her second consecutive shutout as GWU ran past the Lady Eagles by a 2-0 margin on a blustery Tuesday night.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half of play with neither side getting much of a look until Winthrop’s Emily Anderson had her shot batted down by Razem at the 22:55 mark. Gardner-Webb had its best chance sail high as Leeanna Woodworth’s contested shot cleared the crossbar at the 35:17 mark.
Winthrop seemingly gained control in the early stages of the second frame as they pushed the ball down the field and let four shots fly in the opening 12 minutes of the half. The Bulldog defense refused to break, keeping the score knotted at zeroes.
Gardner-Webb bounced back from the early Eagle pressure, finally breaking through at the 60:29 mark as Woodworth and Angie Harvey assisted a quick Woods’ goal for the 1-0 GWU advantage. The play developed slowly as Woodworth took the corner kick and passed to Harvey. After Winthrop briefly gained control of the ball, Harvey regained possession and hit Woodworth who found Woods for the tally.
The dust had barely settled when GWU added a second score just 45 seconds later as Woodworth and Woods teamed up on a two-on-one breakaway. Woodworth had her first shot batted aside by Poulos but chased it down and sent it across the face of the goal, finding an open Woods on the left side who blasted home her second goal of the game. The two-goal performance by Woods is the second such multi-goal effort of her career.
Razem, who was honored on Monday as the Atlantic Sun’s Defensive Player of the Week, took over from that point on, stopping a flurry of Lady Eagle chances over the final 30 minutes to preserve the 2-0 Gardner-Webb win.
Razem’s 11 saves tied her career-best, which was set in Gardner-Webb’s 4-1 victory over Stetson in the first round of the 2004 A-Sun Tournament. The shutout marks Razem’s second in as many matches this season and is the second time in her young career that the sophomore keeper has posted consecutive shutouts.
With her two assists, Woodworth increased her own school record for career assists to 30 while also moving into sole possession of second place on Gardner-Webb’s all-time scoring list with 108 points. The Virginia Beach, Va., native is now just five points back of Kristin Lott’s (1992-1995) all-time mark of 113 points.
The win moves Gardner-Webb to 2-0 on the year with its next test coming on Thursday at Appalachian State. The match is set to kickoff at 4 p.m.
