Campbell, Shaw Repeat as Team, Individual Champions
Date Posted: 4/11/2007
Buies Creek, N.C. – Campbell University and Alejandra Shaw stood atop the
leaderboard from the start of the 2007 Atlantic Sun Women’s Golf Championship
and the final day was no exception as both repeated as the team and individual
champions, respectively.
Campbell continued to extend its lead as the tournament progressed, ending
with a 29-stroke advantage over ETSU, who finished second. The 29-stroke victory
ties the third-largest in A-Sun Championship history and the most since 1992,
when Florida International (954) defeated second-place College of Charleston
(1004) by 50 strokes. The A-Sun record for largest winning margin came in 1991,
when Florida International (648) won by 76 strokes over second-place Samford
(724) in a 36-hole event.
The win was the fifth tournament win of the season for the Camels and marked
the eighth time in the past 12 years that Campbell has claimed the team title.
Shaw completed her title defense, shooting a final round of 70. With the win,
Shaw joins Moira Dunn of Florida International (1991-93), Lisbeth Meincke of
Georgia State (2003-05) and Mara Larrauri of Campbell (1997-98), as one of four
women to win multiple individual titles.
With her three-round total of 212, Shaw finished 4-under-par, breaking an A-Sun
record previously held by Campbell’s Kylie Pratt (214), shot in 1999.
Shaw’s 14-stroke victory ties the largest individual victory in A-Sun
Championship history. Florida International’s Moria Dunn also recorded
a 14-stroke victory in 1993.
The team race for second place was much tighter and saw many changes throughout
the final round. Stetson entered Day 3 in second place, but fell in the standings
while ETSU climbed up to grab the second spot. Mercer finished third.
In other action, Stacey Linduska of Gardner-Webb scored a hole-in-one on the
par-3, 145-yard third hole on Wednesday morning. Later in the day, Laura Jansone
of East Tennessee State aced the par-3, 180-yard 14th hole.
