FRANKLIN, IND. – Freshman Mary Mattson birdied four of the last six holes Tuesday to claim individual honors, while Campbell won the team crown in the Shoot-out at the Legends intercollegiate women’s golf tournament. One day after shooting a school-record one-under-par 287 in the second round, Campbell matched its old record with a 290 to finish the event at 877 strokes, a school-record for a 54-hole tournament.

A freshman from Ijamsville, Md., and Urbana High School, Mattson overcame a six-stroke deficit over the last eight holes to win her first collegiate tournament in only her third start. Campbell shot two-over as a team on Tuesday to hand 16th-year head coach John Crooks his 52nd coaching win. Crooks stands second among all active Division I women’s coaches in tournament victories.

“Entering the fall, my goal was to play in all five of our tournaments,” said Mattson. “I didn’t set a goal to win, but I might have to re-think those goals now. Putting was the key. Yesterday, I made 12 birdies (over 36 holes) and knew I was going to have to make some today. Over the last couple of holes I played, Coach was walking with me and I was comfortable.”

Mattson birdied 15, 16 and 17, then made par on 18 to shoot a one-over 73 for Tuesday’s round and one-under 215 for the event on the par-72, 6073-yard Legends of Indiana course layout. She was the lone golfer in the 90-player field to finish the tournament below par.
