Date Posted: 4/12/2006
DEBARY, Fla. - Campbell continued its dominance in women’s golf on Wednesday, winning the 2006 Atlantic Sun Championship held at DeBary Golf & Country Club by 25 strokes. It marked the seventh championship title for the Camels in the last 11 years and earned them a spot in next month’s NCAA Regional.
The Camels shot a final round 301, the lowest round of this year’s event. Campbell junior Alejandra Shaw led from wire-to-wire and won by four strokes (219) over Ashley Barton of East Tennessee State (223). Campbell finished with four golfers in the top seven and had a member of the squad shoot the top round of the day on each of the three days of the tournament. Finishing third with a score of 232 was Praewnapa Phol-Uayporn of Florida Atlantic, with Campbell’s Sofia Gorelik finishing fourth at 233. Rounding out the top five, all of which earned A-Sun All-Tournament honors was ETSU’s Natalia Giraldo, shooting a 234 over the 54-hole event.
Shaw is the first Camel to win medalist honors since 2000 and the fifth in conference history. Teammate Emily Simpson shot a final round 70 to finish seventh overall. Her 70 was the second lowest final round score in tournament history.
A-Sun newcomer ETSU finished second after a final round 316. Rain early on Wednesday morning softened the greens, allowing for much improved scoring conditions over days one and two. Florida Atlantic shot its best round of this week’s event, a final round 312 to finish in third, with Jacksonville finishing fourth after a final round 324. Gardner-Webb rounded out the top five with a final round 315.
The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.
