CHAMPIONSHIP NOTABLES
CAMPBELL TRADITION GROWS in 2006
Campbell head coach John Crooks was inducted into the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in January. Crooks is one of only seven coaches in women's golf history to record 50 tournament victories on the Division I level. Campbell has finished either first (six times) or second (four) in 10 of the 11 Atlantic Sun women's golf championship tournaments since the Camels joined the A-Sun prior to the 1994-95 academic year. The Camels have won at least one team collegiate women's golf tournament each season since Crooks took over the program 15 years ago. CU won the Stetson Invitational last November and also has three runner-up finishes this year. Both Maite Ortiz de Pinedo (Stetson Invitational) and Jacyln Perlman (Pelican Preserve Invitational) recorded their first collegiate tournament wins in 2005-06 running the total of active players with a tournament title to four for the Camels.
MEDALISTS
Four members of the 2006 field have won individual titles this season: June Bolme, FAU (El Diablo Intercollegiate); Maite Ortiz de Pinedo, Campbell (Stetson Invitational); Jaclyn Perlman, Campbell (Pelican Preserve Invitational).
MERCER RECORD BREAKERS
Mercer broke the school record for a round twice during the 2005-06 campaign. First, at the Wachovia Great Smokies Intercollegiate, the Bears shot a 297 in the second round breaking the previous school record. At the Taco Bell Invitational, Mercer proceeded to break the record again, firing a first-round 294.
IT’S IN THE HOLE
Freshman Natalia Godoy made a big splash in her first season with Stetson. The Weston, Fla., native carded a hole-in-one at the 210-yard, 5th hole at Victoria Hills Golf Club during the first round of the Stetson Invitational. She is one of only 23 collegiate women’s golfers to score an ace this year.
NEWCOMERS NOT WELCOME
East Tennessee State University will be competing in their first Atlantic Sun Championship. The women’s golf event has not been kind to newcomers. Dismissing the championship’s inaugural field, no first time entry has ever captured the team title. The trophy is even more exclusive as only four teams in conference history have ever claimed the team title with Campbell as the only current member to own one. The Lady Camels own a conference record five women’s golf championships.
LOW ROUND
Ashley Barton and Alejandra Shaw have each carded a 69 this season, the lowest single round total by an A-Sun golfer this season. Shaw owns the low 54 total as well after finishing the UNLV Invitational with a 215. The junior has a chance to become just the 22nd golfer in conference history to post three top-10 finishes in the championship. The Vina del Mar, Chile native is the top returner from last season after placing second.
TIGHT RACE
Three of the last four medalists have won the championship by two strokes or less including a four-hole playoff to determine a winner during the 2003 event.
