Roundtree Earns First Career Player of the Week

MACON, Ga. – After suffering through a six-game losing streak earlier this season, the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball squad won its final game of 2007 and reeled off three straight wins this past week to open 2008. Sophomore Margaret Roundtree averaged nearly a double-double for the week and powered all three Bulldog victories, including two A-Sun wins, and captured her first career Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The forward averaged 19.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, helping the Bulldogs go 3-0 overall, including a 2-0 mark in A-Sun play. Gardner-Webb opens the conference schedule with consecutive victories for the third time in the last four years. The Durham, N.C. native drilled 25-of-44 shots for a .568 percentage, and dished out six assists while tallying five blocks and a steal. The biology major averaged 21.5 points per game in A-Sun play and 8.0 rebounds, nailing 18-of-29 shots from the floor against Lipscomb and Belmont; helping GWU beat the Bruins for the first time since the A-Sun Tournament two years ago.

The A-Sun consists of some of the most dynamic private and public institutions in the region: Belmont University, Campbell University, East Tennessee State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Gardner-Webb University, Jacksonville University, Kennesaw State University, Lipscomb University, Mercer University, University of North Florida, University of South Carolina Upstate and Stetson University.

Ashley Williams, Jacksonville (Sr. – F – Jacksonville, Fla. – Business) – Averaged 22.5 points, eight rebounds (including an average of five offensive boards) and two blocks while shooting .593 (16-27) from the floor and .867 (13-15) from the free-throw line.
Britteny Henderson, Campbell (Jr. – F – Atlanta, G. – Psychology) – Reigning player of the week posted her third straight double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Shennette Sheffield, UNF (So. – C – Fort Lauderdale, Fla.. – Criminal Justice) – Highlighted UNF's third-straight win with a career performance, scoring a career-high 21 points and pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds in a win against Florida Gulf Coast.
