JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The SEC joined the Atlantic-10 and ACC as conferences to fall to the JU women's basketball team in 2007-08 as the Dolphins defeated Florida, 75-64, Wednesday evening in front of 929 fans at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
JU (5-2), which increased its program record home winning streak to 13 games, outscored the Gators in the second half (45-33) while registering 37 points and 16 fast-break points off of 28 Florida turnovers. Along with Florida and the SEC, the Dolphins have tallied their first wins over the ACC (Miami) and the Atlantic-10 (UMass) this season. JU is also off to its best start in program history (1999-present).
UF (4-3) led 31-30 at the break but did not connect on any shots from beyond the arc (0-11), were out rebounded, 33-30, and finished a game-low .696 (16-23) from the free-throw line.
Trailing 55-53 with 6:25 remaining, JU used a 10-0 run to take a 63-55 advantage (4:04) and break the contest open. UF would get as close as five points (63-58) with 3:45 left, but the Dolphins answered with a 12-4 run to put the game away. Prior to the Dolphins' first run, the two squads battled through 14 ties and 22 lead changes.
"This is a great win for our program and it was even more special to do it in front of a big crowd at the Arena," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We were hyped up early on, and we tried to do too much at times during the game, but we settled down when it counted."
