Jacksonville at Florida Gulf Coast
Thursday, February 28
Alico Arena
Fort Myers, Fla.
5:00 p.m.
Two of the leaders of the Atlantic Sun Conference face off Thursday evening
inside Alico Arena when Florida Gulf Coast welcomes in Jacksonville. The Dolphins
defeated the Eagles in the teams’ first meeting back in January, and if they
complete the sweep, they will cement a second-place A-Sun finish. If FGCU can
claim the rematch, the Eagles will keep alive their slim hopes for a regular
season title and a berth in the WNIT. Senior Ashley Williams and junior Virginia
Gregoire lead the Dolphins into Alico Arena, averaging 16.2 and 14.0 points
per game, respectively. The Eagles counter with Delia De La Torre, averaging
14.6 points per contest.
A-Sun Notables
BUCS ARE BALLIN’
ETSU has been amazing in its last four games. The Lady Bucs are averaging 89.2
points, hitting 49.3 percent of their shots (133-270) and 47.5 from 3-point
range (29-61). Michele DeVault has hit 16 treys during this stretch and sophomore
Siarre Evans has pitched in with eight. In addition, freshman Kami Phillips
has been dishing the rock out like candy as she has 26 assists to only six turnovers
in the four contests. Four of the five Lady Buccaneer starters are posting over
14 points per game during this impressive run.
JACKSONVILLE RECORDS ABOUT TO FALL
Off to its best record in program history, JU tied its program record for wins
in a season (21) with a win over Mercer on Feb. 25. The best record in history
to this point, was a 19-8 mark by the 2006-07 squad.
HAWKINS HAS NO PROBLEM GETTING OVER THE HUMP
USC Upstate sophomore Courtney Hawkins is the only player in the A-Sun to score
30 points this season, doing so twice, both times against Campbell. The sophomore
guard posted an A-Sun season-high 35 points on Monday at Campbell, hitting 12-of-17
shots from the field and posted 30 against the Camels at home on Jan. 12. In
the two games, Hawkins averaged 32.5 points.
