Gardner-Webb Marches into Semifinal Friday
|

DOTHAN, Ala. – DOTHAN, Ala. – Fourth-seeded Gardner-Webb gave the favorites a clean sweep during the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Basketball Championship after their 67-47 win over No. 5 Campbell at the Dothan Civic Center.
GWU advances for a rematch from last season’s semifinals against No. 1 Belmont. The Bulldogs defeated the Bruins last year to reach their first ever A-Sun Title Game.
Gardner-Webb (14-16) never trailed in the game and used an 18-3 run early in the first half to put their stamp on the game, leading 27-9 just over eight minutes into the contest. Seven different Bulldogs scored in the first half as GWU torched the nets to the tune of 63.6% from the floor highlighted by 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Camels (8-21) made a go at getting back into the game early in the second half. The lead was cut down to nine points after an old fashioned three-point play by All-Atlantic Sun performer Marlena Murphy. However, The Bulldogs would reel off 11 straight points to put the game away.
Second team All-Atlantic Sun guard Candyse Kelly scored a game-high 18 points for the Bulldogs while Shameka Smith added 14 points and nine boards off the bench. Campbell was led in scoring by Murphy who finished with nine points.
