|

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In a come-from-behind victory, Belmont (21-5, 15-1 A-Sun) clinched its third regular season title in four years with a 54-51 victory over Gardner-Webb (12-16, 9-8 A-Sun). Despite leading by as many as 14 points at the half and holding reigning A-Sun Player of the Year Alysha Clark to five points, GWU couldn't pull out the win.
With 3:28 remaining, Belmont took the lead for good off a layup by Tereva Moore, going up, 44-43. Both teams had 20 turnovers each, but Gardner-Webb was 9-17 from the charity stripe in the second half. Belmont converted on 14-of-17.
Amber Rockwell led the Bruins with 15 points, and four rebounds. Jessica Bobbitt had 12 points, seven rebounds and Shaunda Strayhorn had 10 points and two boards.
Gardner-Webb's Candyse Kelly scored a game high 20 points and three rebounds, while Shameka Smith tallied nine points and nine rebounds before fouling out in the final minutes.
Belmont's home court winning streak improves to 23 games and the Bruins will be top seed going into the 2007 Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Tournament, held in Dothan, Ala., March 8-10.
