Belmont dropped its first game in 12 tries to open its weekend
road trip but rebounded in the second game to finish at .500 for the stretch.
The Bruins fell 69-65 to Mercer on Thursday and dominated Stetson, 72-56, on
Saturday. Redshirt freshman Amber Rockwell scored a career-high 20 points
against the Bears, including five three pointers. Against the Hatters, senior
Destri Bockey drilled a career-high 21 points. Tereva Moore contributed 13 points
in the effort. Belmont returns to action on Saturday as they host Lipscomb
in part two of the Battle of the Boulevard. The game, which will be broadcast
on CSS.
ETSU escaped Jacksonville with a split over the weekend as
they defeated UNF, 61-58, on Saturday. The Lady Bucs were hoping to increase
their second-place lead in the conference standings on, but ETSU fell to the
Dolphins, 83-79. The game against Jacksonville marked the first time ETSU
lost when scoring over 70 points since Feb. 4, 2006 when they fell to Florida
Atlantic (85-76). The Lady Bucs are now 11-1 this season when they reach the
70-point plateau. Siarre Evans averaged 17 points and four rebounds in the
two contests this weekend in Jacksonville.
Behind Brittany Harmon's spectacular play, the Gardner-Webb
women's basketball team posted victories over Stetson and Mercer last week.
Harmon nearly recorded a triple-double in the win over Stetson, finishing
with 11 points, 12 rebounds and a school-record nine blocks. With solid post
play and outstanding performances off the bench on Saturday, GWU ousted Mercer
by a 58-46 score. The Bulldogs look to extend their winning streak this week
when they travel to Lipscomb and Belmont.
The Dolphins are in the midst of a program record for wins
in a season (16), surpassing the previous mark of 13 in 2000-01. JU is 11-1
at home, which is the most wins in program history. The Dolphins have also set
a program record with eight straight home wins. At 10-4 in the A-Sun, JU set
a new program record for conference wins in a season, surpassing the previous
mark of 9-9 in 2000-01. Head coach Jill Dunn is one win shy of setting the
progra record for career wins by a Dolphin coach.
Stephanie Scearce has been on a roll of late. The sophomore
post player, who had just one double-double before last week, has put up two
straight double-doubles and is averaging 15.4 points over her last five games.
Kennesaw State has three players averaging in double-figures this season.
Rosetta Hollis at 13.1 ppg, Jennifer Baker at 12.0 ppg and Scearce at 10.3 ppg.
Injuries have plagued the Lady Owls this season. Head coach Colby Tilley is
currently without Ngoneh Gaye, Nikki Gurley and JoeDonna Molden. Also Hollis
and Ashley Johnson have missed significant time.
Forward Rachel Davis has scored in double figures in her last
three games, including 10 Saturday night in the loss at Belmont. The Lady
Bisons close out the home portion of the season Thursday and Saturday with visits
from Gardner-Webb and Campbell. The Lady Bisons are 6-5 at home this season,
5-2 at Allen Arena in A-Sun games.
Rhonda Owens led Mercer in scoring and rebounding last week, averaging
12.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg. The senior guard posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double
against Gardner-Webb Saturday after scoring 13 points Thursday against Campbell.
Sally Skeldon moved into a tie for 11th place with Marica Maddox (Georgia
State, 1998-02) in the Atlantic Sun record books with her two assists Saturday;
registering 518 during her career. The senior guard needs 10 more assists to
pass Michelle Michael (Stetson, 1985-88) for 10th place.
UNF finished the week with a pair of tough-fought losses at home
falling to Kennesaw State and ETSU. The Ospreys lost by two to Kennesaw State
after holding a 13-point lead early in the second half before battling ETSU
down the wire before falling by three. Those pair of losses gave UNF a 3-6
record at home and will also give the Lady Ospreys their first losing record
at UNF Arena this decade.
The Hatters traveled to North Carolina to take on two conference
opponents Gardner-Webb and Campbell. The Hatters first match-up was against
the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb on Thursday. After struggling to get things started
in the first half, the Hatters jumped out on a 10-0 run to begin the second
half. The Hatters cut the Bulldogs lead to eight but could not get the shots
to fall after that, taking a 47-61 loss.. Senior Janene Maclin led the Hatters
with 17 points and seven rebounds. Maclin also reached a milestone, recording
her 1000th career point at Stetson.
