Brooke “Single”-handedly Extends JU’s Winning Ways

MACON, Ga. – Senior outside hitter Brooke Singleton carried the Dolphins on her back as Jacksonville went 3-0 last week to push their win streak to a program-record 12 since joining the A-Sun in 1998. She earned the first Player of the Week award of her career, the conference office announced on Monday.

In three matches, which included a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at FGCU, Singleton led the squad with 54 kills and 4.15 kills per set while also tallying two double-doubles, 35 digs, 2.69 digs per set, a .277 hitting percentage, five blocks and four aces. At UNF, she helped the squad escape match point and pull out a 3-2 win with 16 kills and 13 digs while hitting .277. In a 3-0 win at Stetson, Singleton made quick work of the Hatters by tallying 13 kills, six digs, three aces and two blocks. In the showdown for second with the Eagles, she posted the best game of her career to lead a three-set rally with a career-high 25 kills, a .311 hitting percentage, 16 digs and three blocks.

The previous week, Singleton emerged as the steady force for JU as the Dolphins overcame an array of injuries. Singleton, who had tallied a double-double in three consecutive matches, proved instrumental in a 3-1 win against ETSU and a 3-0 victory versus Campbell. Against the Lady Bucs, Singleton tallied a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs while hitting .306 (17-2-49). Against the Camels, she finished with 10 kills and 11 digs while also contributing three blocks, one of which helped seal a 29-27 rally win in set one. For the week, Singleton led the squad with 3.86 kills per set while ranking second with 3.0 digs per set and hitting .238 in two matches.

Sabrita Gulley – Kennesaw State (Jr. - OH - North Chicago, Ill. - Human Services) – Gulley tallied 4.18 kills per set, leading the Owls to a 2-1 week in the A-Sun and into sixth place in the conference. On Tuesday against Mercer, Gulley notched a match-high 21 kills to go with 16 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. After leading the Owls with eight kills and 11 digs against Lipscomb Friday night, Gulley notched 17 kills and 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season Saturday in the Owls' 3-1 win against Belmont. Gulley made 11 kills with just one error over the last two sets as Kennesaw State earned its first win against Belmont in program history. The North Chicago, Ill. native also collected three total blocks, including two solo blocks, in the win.

Krista Hurley – Mercer (Jr. - MB - LaVerne, Calif. - Communications) – Hurley smashed down 25 kills with just six errors in three matches over the week. The La Verne, Calif. native sparked the Mercer offense with 10 kills and only three errors (.412 hitting percentage) in the Bears' sweep of Belmont. Hurley led the Bears’ defense, racking up 11 block-assists in just ten sets played. Hurley ranks fourth among A-Sun players in hitting percentage (.318).

Stefine “Jake” Pease – Lipscomb (Jr. - S - Berryton, Kan. - Fashion Merchandising) – Pease led the Lady Bisons to a 3-0 record for the week with 3-1 win against Belmont and 3-0 wins on the road at Kennesaw State and Belmont. The junior setter notched a match high 17 digs against Mercer.

Mindy Quimby – USC Upstate (Fr. - OH - Keenesburg, Ohio – Graphic Design) – Quimby solidified the Spartans' defense and helped pace the team's offense during a pair of A-Sun matches this week. In the four-set upset win against ETSU on Tuesday, the freshman outside hitter posted seven kills, 11 digs and a career-high four aces. Quimby also posted her first career double-double with a career-high 10 kills to go with 13 digs at Campbell on Saturday. The Keenesburg, Ohio native also added two blocks and has tallied three straight 10-dig matches for the Spartans.

Emily Werner – Campbell (Jr. - OH - Sarasota, Fla. - Elementary Education) –Werner led the Camels to a perfect 3-0 record, including a 2-0 A-Sun mark on the week, averaging 3.70 kills and 2.30 digs per set, fueling Campbell to its most wins since 2001. Werner also tacked on 0.70 blocks and 0.50 aces on the week, adding to her 4.55 points per set average. In a 3-2 win against ETSU on Friday night, Werner tagged 21 kills, 13 digs, four blocks and four aces. Werner's 27.0 points was just half a tally off her career-high of 27.5, set in the final week of her freshman season at North Carolina A&T. The Sarasota, Fla. native's season-high 21 kills, the most of any Camel this year, meanwhile, is two shy of a career mark, also set at NC A&T. Werner's four aces tied a career mark as well, one the junior outside hitter has reached five times in her career. Werner added 15 kills, eight digs, two blocks and an ace in the Camels’ win against USC Upstate, hitting .367 (15-4-30) on the afternoon. Werner now has amassed 17 double-digit point contests, 14 double-figure kill matches, hit over .300 nine times, and has collected a team-high seven double-doubles.
