|

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU volleyball team picked up another home win with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) win over Jacksonville in the Atlantic Sun Match of the Week. With the 30th straight win, the Eagles improve to 9-6 overall and 8-1 in the Atlantic Sun while Jacksonville falls to 10-6 and 6-3.
The Eagles opened a 6-2 advantage early in game one, picking up three kills from Ana Kokanovic. The Dolphins went on a 4-0 run and eventually took a 9-8 lead and upped their advantage to 13-11 on a kill from Brittany Lehman. A 6-1 FGCU run put the Eagles up 19-15 and later a 3-0 run put the set out of reach as FGCU took the first set 25-19.
FGCU got off to a 5-2 lead with Audrey Campbell picking up three kills in the opening moments of the set. Again, the Dolphins would rally to take a brief lead at 10-9 before a 4-0 FGCU run swung the lead back in FGCU’s favor at 13-10. JU would tie the set a 20 apiece and FGCU then outscored the Dolphins 5-1 to win 25-21.
The third set was back and forth early on until FGCU was able to open up a 17-14 lead. An 8-2 run by the Dolphins that was aided by five Eagle errors gave the visitors a 21-19 lead. JU would push their lead to 23-20 prompting a FGCU timeout. A 3-0 run by the Eagles evened the set, but a kill by Sara Bendorf gave the Dolphins a set point. Consecutive kills by Kokanovic gave FGCU a set point and forced a JU timeout. Out of the break, Audrey Campbell ended the match with a kill and a 26-24 win in the third set.
"We are getting close to where I want us to be," said Head Coach Dave Nichols. "We are a very good side-out team right now. I am very proud of the way our team plays the big points and that is something we emphasize in practice."
