FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU volleyball team continued its winning streak with a victory over Gardner-Webb University in the first A-Sun Conference game in school history. Sweeping the Bulldogs 3-0, the FGCU volleyball team is now 10-1 overall, with a 1-0 record in the A-Sun, the Bulldogs fall to 8-8 and 0-1 in league play. Game one was dominated by Roberta Santos (Recife, Brazil) who had a .636 hitting percentage with seven kills. Cara Ziegler (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Santos picked up two big blocks in the game which gave the Eagles a nice lead over Gardner-Webb. The Eagles were able to maintain a lead the whole game and pulled away in the end with a 30-19 win. Gaining a lead in game two, the Bulldogs were able to maintain the lead throughout the early part of the second game. Heidi Steinebrunner led the Bulldogs with eight kills. The Eagles were able to catch up to their opponent and both teams fought back and forth over the lead. The Eagles were able to pull away late with a 5-1 run to close game two with a 30-26 win. During game three, FGCU proved to be back on track creating a 17-9 lead during the game. The Bulldogs quickly bounced back leaving only a two point deficit between themselves and the Eagles. The Eagles were able to hold off the Bulldogs in game three, to notch their first A-Sun conference win in school history. Audra Harrison led the Bulldogs with 11 kills and added six digs. Katie Matykowski added a team-high 13 digs in the match. Santos racked up 15 kills, 17 assists, nine digs and three blocks while hitting .375. Youngquist tallied 12 kills while Ana Kokanovic hit .588 with 10 kills and three aces. Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) led all players with 20 digs on the night.
