The Bruins made the most of their road trip to North Carolina this weekend,
sweeping conference rivals Campbell and Gardner-Webb to improve their conference
record to 4-0 and their season-long winning streak to five games, sweeping their
opponents each time. Belmont's record is nine straight wins, set back in 1994.
The Bruins host Memphis on Tuesday and renew their rivalry with A-Sun opponent
Lipscomb on Thursday at home.
The Fighting Camels look to rebound from a pair of Atlantic Sun home losses
last weekend with a Monday tilt against Virginia Commonwealth at home and then
a pair of conference road matches against Stetson and Florida Atlantic over
the weekend. Campbell continues to be one of the best defensive teams in the
conference holding opponents to just .182 hitting, which ranks third in the
conference, and the Camels pound out 2.49 blocks per game, which is tops in
the conference.
The Lady Bucs extended their winning streak to seven games this week, picking
up wins over Wofford, Lincoln Memorial, and North Carolina A&T, to improve to
13-5. The winning streak is the best by a Lady Buccaneer squad since the 2001
season, when ETSU rattled off 10-straight victories. Callie Kiselich led the
Lady Bucs with 39 kills and 40 digs on the week. Sarah Buhr was right behind
her teammate with 35 kills and 38 digs. ETSU goes for eight-straight on Tuesday,
as it hosts Western Carolina. The Lady Bucs then face UNF and JU on the road.
Kelly Paiva guided FAU to a 2-0 week. She led the team with 38 kills and was
one shy of the team lead with 32 digs. The senior also added eight blocks and
three service aces for 46.5 points in two matches. With 408 kills on the year,
she moved into fourth in FAU's season records. Middle blocker Justine Petry
has also stepped up her play and finished the week with 28 kills and 11 blocks
as the team defeated North Florida and Stetson. The squad returns home this
week to facce Gardner-Webb and Campbell in A-Sun action.
Gardner-Webb upped its record to 9-8 in matches outside of Paul Porter Arena
with a four-set win at North Carolina A&T on Tuesday. Audra Harrison set a school
record with 30 digs and tacked on 10 kills, two aces and two blocks in the win.
The 'Dogs then suffered two home sweeps to Lipscomb and Belmont over the weekend
to drop them to 9-16 and 0-4 in conference play. GWU will play at Charlotte,
FAU and Stetson in the upcoming week. Jacksonville
Dolphins
The Jacksonville volleyball team continues its midseason turnaround as the Dolphins
knocked off Mercer, 3-0, to win their 13th straight match in Atlantic Sun Conference
competition. Eva Stoilova had 12 kills and 11 digs for her fourth straight double-double
while Danielle Neville added 11 kills. Joanna Silva led the JU defense by contributing
on six of the Dolphins' 11 blocks. Jacksonville is back in action as they face
archrival UNF in a rematch from JU's 3-1 win. First serve is set for Wednesday
at 7 p.m.
Lipscomb is off to its best start in A-Sun with a 4-0 reocrd and on a 5 game
winning streak - longest in Lipscomb volleyball’s short history. Freshman Jessica
Turner had 20 kills in the 3-2 win at Campbell, 14 in the 3-0 win at Gardner-Webb,
and 14 in the 3-0 win at home over Samford. Her 20 kills vs. Campbell were a
season and career high. Freshman Cara Wilber had double-doubles in all three
matches for the week against Samford, Campbell and Garder-Webb.
Mercer Bears
Mercer (5-15, 0-5 A-Sun) has a light schedule for the week of October 9-15.
The Bears travel to Savannah State for a match on Tuesday, October 11, but have
a weekend off. Jackie Viren posted a career best 24 kills and five aces for
the Bears against Georgia State in a five game Mercer victory. The Bears dropped
Atlantic Sun Conference losing streak reached five matches after being swept
by North Florida and Jacksonville on Saturday and Sunday.
The UNF volleyball team has completed its marathon road swing in September
and October, when the Lady Ospreys played 12 of their first 17 matches on the
road. UNF is 7-5 in matches played away from UNF Arena this year. Since opening
the season 3-6, the Lady Ospreys have gone 6-2 in their last eight matches to
move back over .500. UNF has won 61 of its last 62 conference regular-season
matches dating back to 2000, with 60 of those victories coming when UNF was
a member of the Peach Belt Conference
The Hatters have lost seven in a row and face a must-win situation at home
this weekend vs. Campbell and Gardner-Webb. Stetson is in the middle of a four
game homestand after playing 13 of its first 16 matches on the road. Dee Ann
Dempsey ranks sixth in school history with 1124 kills.
