LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the first NCAA Tournament match of the program’s history, the Belmont Bruins fought hard, but fell to #11 seed Ohio State 30-22, 30-16, 30-22 in a NCAA first round match held Friday evening at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Coach Deane Webb “knew their size would be a problem for us. They also played very good defense, which is often overlooked as a result of their size. Ohio State made some special plays on their side of the net.”
Seniors Erin Janson and Katie Tobiasz were able to experience the “greatest way of going out,” as Janson described the experience. The outside hitter came to Belmont and saw the team open her freshman season with an 0-18 record. “Looking back, I would not change a thing. Janson posted six kills and nine digs.
Tobiasz noted afterward that it was “always a dream to end your college career at the NCAA’s. Ever since I started playing volleyball, this was the ultimate goal.”
The team finishes the season with an impressive 24-7 record and first conference championship. Belmont returns ten underclassmen for the 2007 season, as they attempt to defend the A-Sun title.
