Lipscomb Takes Boulevard Battle; Advance to Finals

Friday, November 19, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the similar fashion to last year’s semifinal, top-seeded Lipscomb defeated fourth-seeded Belmont, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-11), in the first semifinal of the Atlantic Sun Volleyball Championship at FGCU’s Alico Arena on Friday.

The match up was the fifth consecutive “Battle of the Boulevard” in the A-Sun Championship as Lipscomb has now won the last two meetings between the teams including last season’s win en route to their second A-Sun Championship. Last season, Lipscomb was the first top-seeded team to win the title game in the last five championships.

Lipscomb cruised through set one taking a 10-point lead at 22-12 on a kill by The A-Sun Player of the Year Stefine “Jake” Pease. Belmont scored back-to-back points, but the Lady Bisons recorded three in a row to take the set. For the set, Lipscomb’s hitting percentage of .407 was no match for the Bruins’ .067.

In set two, Lipscomb once again jumped in front quickly at 10-5, but the Bruins battled back and kept it to within one or two points all the way up to 24-23. A service error by Belmont gave the Lady Bisons all they needed to go up 2-0 heading into the third set. The Lady Bisons had no problem in the final stanza as they cruised to a 16-6 lead before going on a 9-5 run to take the match on another Pease kill.

Lipscomb (23-5) hit .276 for the match compared to Belmont’s .082. Pease had a match-high 38 assists, while all-conference first team middle blocker Alex Kelly recorded the only double-double of the game with 15 kills and 15 digs. All-conference second team outside hitter Meghan Hinmeyer also recorded double-digit kills with 10, while junior Katie Rose added nine kills of her own to go along with 10 digs.

All-Freshman selection Hannah Miranda had 22 assists for Belmont, while all-conference first team outside hitter Kayla Albritton added six kills and 13 digs. Jen Myer had a team-high seven kills.
