Dobson Collects Top Player Honor; Bisons Named Top Team

Full Preseason All-Conference Team & Poll

MACON, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun Conference announced the 2014 Volleyball Preseason All-Conference Awards on Wednesday afternoon as voted on by the league coaches. 

Lipscomb was picked as the top team garnering six of eight first place votes. Jacksonville, the 2013 A-Sun Tournament Champions, claimed the two remaining first place votes in second place. FGCU and Northern Kentucky rounded out the top half of the coaches poll. 

Returning 2013 Player of the Year, Jewell Dobson of Lipscomb earned the Preseason Player of the Year award, while teammate Bri McCombs claimed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors. Abby Fesl of North Florida took home the Preseason Setter of the Year award, a new award for the 2014 season. 

2014 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Preseason All-Conference Team:
* Jewell Dobson, MB, Sr., Lipscomb - The 2013 A-Sun Player of the Year returns for her senior season. Led the A-Sun in overall hitting percentage (.378), kills per set (4.53) and points per set (5.16) and garnered First Team All-Conference honors.

Olivia Mesner, MB, Sr., FGCU - Recorded 343 kills and a team-high attack percentage of .314 last season. Led the Eagles with 211 kills in conference play earning All-Conference Second Team honors.

Sammie Strausbaugh, OH,  Jr., Jacksonville - A 2013 A-Sun First Team and All-Tournament Team selection recorded 417 kills, 340 digs and 42 aces last season. Led the conference with 0.35 aces per set.

Kelly Marcinek, OH, So., Kennesaw State - Won the 2013 A-Sun Freshman of the Year Award, while leading the Owls in kills (402) and kills per set (3.53) a year ago. Had double-digit kills in 24 of 30 matches, displaying great consistency in her freshman season.

Lauren Ford, OH, Sr., Lipscomb - Ranked third overall in A-Sun in kills per set (3.77) and points per set (4.07). Set new career-high with 25 digs on November 11.

Bri McCombs, DS/Libero, Jr., Lipscomb - Won A-Sun Libero of the Year honors in 2013. Recorded 300 digs in conference matches and led the league with 4.62 digs per set. Set a new career high with 25 digs in a match last season.

Abby Fesl, Setter, So., North Florida - Made 25 or more assists in 18 matches, including seven matches of 40 or more assists. A-Sun All-Freshman Team selection in 2013.

Jenna Ruble, MH, Sr., Northern Kentucky - Led the Norse with 100 blocks in 2013, while ranking fifth in overall hitting percentage at .316. Posted double digit kills in seven of final eight matches in 2013.

Tiffany Creamer, OH, So., Stetson - Set team record for kills by a freshman last year with 358. Ranked fifth on the team in digs (162) and named to A-Sun All-Freshman Team.

**- A tie in voting resulted in a nine-person team

For the third-straight year, the Atlantic Sun took to social media to poll the fans for the conference preseason superlative awards. Jacksonville's Sammie Strausbaugh landed the Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year, while FGCU's Whitney Masters claimed the Fan-Voted Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and North Florida's Abby Fesl was tabbed the Fan-Voted Preseason Setter of the Year.

The 2014 Atlantic Sun Volleyball season begins Friday, August 29th with seven teams in action.
