Bassett, Tindell Split Top Honors; FGCU Named Top Team

Full Preseason All-Conference Awards

MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference announced the Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference Awards on Thursday afternoon as voted on by the eight league coaches.

FGCU corralled the top spot in the preseason coaches poll with 59 points and four first-place votes just ahead of Jacksonville with 57 and two first-place nods. Kennesaw State, Stetson and Lipscomb rounded out the top-five of the rankings.

FGCU's Tabby Tindell and Jacksonville's Kaitlyn Bassett shared the top individual honors as the league's Preseason Co-Players of the Year after each recorded double-digit goals in 2013. FGCU's tandem of Emma Blackwell and Brittany Brown secured the Preseason Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Year awards.

2014 Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference Team:
Goalkeeper: 
Brittany Brown, Jr., FGCU – Started 18 games for FGCU and finished the year with a 13-3-4 record, nine shutouts and a 0.73 GAA (best in the A-Sun), earning her All-Conference First Team honors.

Defenders
*Emma Blackwell, Jr., FGCU – Was a unanimous All-Conference First Team selection last year, led an FGCU defensive squad that allowed the fewest goals in A-Sun Conference play, tallying a goal and an assist.

Miranda Fyfe, Sr., Jacksonville – Started in 19 games for Jacksonville and tallied two goals and three assists in 2013 while leading the back line.

Alma Gardarsdottir, Sr., Kennesaw State – Amassed 1762 minutes in 19 games for the Owls on defense and is a returning All-Conference First Team member.

Midfielders
Ally Kasun, Jr., FGCU – Notched a goal, five assists and 34 shots in 20 games for FGCU to earn her All-Conference First Team honors in 2013.

Paulina Speckmaier, So., FGCU – Returning All-Conference First Team member, ranked second on the team and third in conference for shots (65) and scored the third-most goals (five) for FGCU last year.

Julia Burton, Sr., Jacksonville – Started in all 21 games for the Dolphins last year and scored two goals.

Nicole Calder, Sr., Kennesaw State – Made the All-Conference Second Team after scoring two goals and three assists for Kennesaw State last year.

Forwards
*Tabby Tindell, So., FGCU – Earned the Freshman of the Year honor and was a unanimous First Team selection after leading the conference with 15 goals and 34 points.

*Kaitlyn Bassett, Sr., Jacksonville – Awarded First Team All-Conference honors after scoring 13 goals (third in the conference) on 78 shots.

Shannen Wacker, Sr., FGCU – Finished second on the team behind Tindell with seven goals and 19 points in the 2013 campaign.

Ellen Lundy, So., Lipscomb – Returning All-Conference First Team selection, finished second in the conference with 14 total goals and 31 points.

** - A tie in voting resulted in a 12-person team

For the third-straight year, the Atlantic Sun took to social media to poll the fans for the conference preseason superlative awards. Lipscomb's Ellen Lundy landed the Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year, while Kennesaw State teammates Brittney Reed and Olivia Sturdivant claimed the Fan-Voted Preseason Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

The 2014 Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer season begins on Friday, August 22nd with all eight teams in action.
