Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate softball signee Kim Brasil led the Markham Jaguars to the Midget Girls U18 Canadian National Championship. The catcher/outfielder earned the tournament’s Top Batter Award.

The national championship marks the second straight national title in the midget classification for Markham. The Jaguars also claimed two straight Bantam Girls National Championships in 2004 and 2005. Brasil was a member of the 2005 squad and has won three national championships with the Jaguars, while fellow signee Sasha Stepaniuk was a member of all four national championship teams with Markham.

Markham began the national championships by going 6-2 in the round robin portion of the tournament, securing a spot playoffs. In the playoffs, the Jaguars opened with a 5-1 victory over the White Rock Renegades out of British Columbia. The win setup a rematch with familiar foe Pickering Heat. Both teams are from Ontario and are frequent opponents. Markham pulled out a 1-0 victory in a classic pitchers duel, setting up a showdown in the championship game with Pickering.

In the national championship game, Markham scored two runs in the second inning to open a 2-0 lead and added three runs in the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 lead, cruising to the 5-0 win and the national championship.

Brasil, from Mississauga, Ontario, went 13-for-22 (.591) with 11 stolen bases in the national championship tournament. She also tallied an on-base percentage over .800.
