MACON, Ga. – UNF’s Gwen Williams and Gardner-Webb’s Taryn Beck stood out in a week of stellar performances on the diamond to earn Atlantic Sun Conference softball weekly accolades as announced by the league office. The duo becomes the 14th and 15th student-athletes to win their first career weekly award in 2007.
Gwen Williams had a monster week offensively hitting .600 with two home runs, three doubles and a 1.150 slugging percentage. Williams set a UNF single-game record against Bethune-Cookman, with seven RBIs, hitting a grand slam to go along with a triple and a double. She came up a single shy of hitting for the cycle. The Jacksonville, Fla., native had a hit in every game this week and posted four multi-hit games, three of which were in conference play. The junior extended her hitting streak to 11 games and saw her batting average rise 28 points to .361, the seventh best mark in the league. Williams is majoring in Health Science.
Taryn Beck surrendered just one run and five hits in a 1-1 week for Gardner-Webb. The loss was a 1-0 decision to No. 23 UNC where she allowed just two singles. Against the Tar Heels, Beck struck out six and surrendered her only run on a passed ball. The junior came back to shut out preseason A-Sun favorite Stetson to pick up a 1-0 win. The Bethel, Ohio native pitched her 14th complete game and gave up just three singles while fanning eight batters. With the victory, Beck piled up her league leading 13th win of the season and seventh shutout. Overall, Beck pitched 13.0 innings while limiting the opposition to just a .125 batting average. Beck majors in Sociology.

The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.
