NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Lipscomb, led by first baseman Heather Collins with a perfect 5-for-5 performance at the plate and eight runs batted in, beat Belmont 12-1 in game one and 11-3 in the nightcap of the A-Sun Series of the Week at Draper Diamond. Both games were called after five innings due to the eight-run lead rule.
"We came out fired up with a lot of energy and a lot of intensity from the first pitch and it showed in our play," Lady Bisons coach Kristin Peck said. "We really attacked the ball.
"We were patient at the plate which is good to see. We have our moments this year when we have been a little impatient. We gained a little momentum in every inning. It seemed like we were in charge from the start. It feels great, especially to beat your cross-town rival."
In game one the Lady Bisons pounded 15 hits. Six players had two hits in the game _ Lauren Dortwegt, Leigh Little, Collins, Kellie Sirus, Abby Keese and Kristie Sirus.
"Heather is seeing the ball very well right now," Peck said. "You can tell when she has confidence with her approach and her at bats. She seems more comfortable at the plate this season. She is very capable of making something happen even if she doesn't get the big hit. She hits the ball so hard that some times she gets on with an error and that's fine.
"She has moved to the No. 3 spot hitting. We have to have consistency there. And Heather is making very good decisions at the plate."
Kellie Sirus sealed the game for the Lady Bisons with a walk-off grand slam to left field in the fifth.
"Kellie does have power," Peck said. "She is slender and sometimes you wonder where the power comes from. But she has some pop in her bat."
Christen Campbell evened her record at 6-6, allowing only one run and one hit in the complete game outing. She struck out seven and walked only one.
"We count on Christen quite a bit," Peck said. "She mixes her pitches well. She has had a little trouble the last couple of weeks spotting her pitches and not getting some borderline calls. We have spent some time talking about that and working on that. I thought that showed. She used her pitches very effectively against Belmont."
In game two the Lady Bisons struck for 12 hits. Collins led the way with three hits, starting a two-RBI double to right center in the first inning, an RBI single in the second and a three-RBI home run to left field in the third. She also walked in the fourth to bring in her seventh run of the game.
