Stetson Garners Second Sweep of Weekly Softball Honors

Macon, Ga. -- Stetson's duo of Melissa Wiggins (Temple Terrace, Fla./Sport
Managment) and Erica Demers (Miami, Fla./Health Science) swept Atlantic Sun
Player & Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season as announced
today by the conference office.
Wiggins helped Stetson to a 6-0 mark including a 4-0 start in Atlantic Sun Conference
play last week, hitting .500 as she went 8-for-16 with 11 RBIs, four walks,
four runs, two home runs, and one doubles in six games. The senior went 3-for-5
with three RBIs, two runs and a walk in a doubleheader against Central Connecticut
State Tuesday evening.
In game one against Belmont, Wiggins hit a two-run homer in her first at-bat
and a grand slam in her second for six RBIs and two runs. She added a double
and a walk in the same game to go 3-for-3. Wiggins also had a single in game
two for her seventh RBI of the doubleheader. The Temple Terrace, Fla. native
also posted an RBI single in the second game against Lipscomb on Sunday.
Demers led Stetson with three shutouts, a 0.39 ERA and a 3-0 record last week.
For the week, she allowed just one run off six hits while striking out 24 batters
in 18.0 innings of work. The freshman threw a one-hitter with seven strikeouts
in four innings of work as the Hatters run-ruled Central Connecticut State 8-0
in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday evening.
She
then notched a no-hitter and shutout in game two as Stetson run-ruled Belmont
8-0 in five innings. She also tied her season high with nine strikeouts. Demers
also tossed the first two innings of the first game against the Bruins allowed
one run off two hits while striking out four batters.
The Miami native then set the school record with her 12th shutout of the season
in game one against Lipscomb. She struck out four batters and allowed just three
hits in seven innings as the Hatters won 4-0.
The Atlantic Sun Conference announces the Player of the Week every Monday during
the 2006 softball campaign.
The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell,
ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb,
Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.

Mary Catherine Vercoe, ETSU (Fr. - P/1B - Signal Mountain, Tenn.
- Biology) -- Recorded her second shutout of the season against
JU, allowing just four hits and striking out three. Went 1-0 on the week with
a 0.00 ERA, also hit a three-run homerun against Jacksonville.
Kathryn Stauffer, FAU (Fr. - RHP - Pembroke Pines, Fla. - Undeclared)
--Stauffer threw back-to-back shutouts as Florida Atlantic opened
conference play with a 3-1 record, splitting two games with Campbell and sweeping
Gardner-Webb. She struck out 13 batters, walked none and allowed four hits total
in two games.
Shauna Corso, FAU (Jr. - 1B - Seal Beach, Calif. - Social Science) --
Corso batted .500 (5-for-10) with three doubles and one home run as Florida
Atlantic opened conference play with a 3-1 record.
Shannon Jensen, JU (So. - P - Callahan, Fla. - Elementary Education)
-- Jensen picked up two wins and posted a 1.36 ERA in the circle during five
appearances for the Dolphins this week. She recorded 23 strikeouts in 25.2 innings
of work and held opposing hitters to a .187 batting average.
Norie Glazebrook, KSU (Fr. - DH - Greenville, S.C. - Undecided) -- Glazebrook
batted .455 (5-of-11) and led the Owls to a 3-1 record over Jacksonville and
UNF. She scored one run, notched three doubles and drove in four runs, while
recording a .727 slugging percentage.
C.J. Martin, MER (Jr. - SS - Woodinville, Wash. - Communications) --
Provided the game-winning hits against Troy and South Florida. She doubled home
the winning runs against Troy and belted a grand slam against USF.
