Summey, Candelino join UNF Men's Basketball

Date Posted: 7/7/2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - University of North Florida men's basketball coach Matt Kilcullen announced a pair of additions to the Ospreys' staff on Monday afternoon - adding Mike Summey and Anthony Candelino as assistant coaches.

Summey comes to UNF after two seasons as an assistant at The Citadel. Prior to that, he spent a season as the top assistant at Queens University in Charlotte in 2003-04 and four seasons as an assistant at Saint Francis University (Pa.) from 1999- 2003.

"With our program's transition to Division I, hiring an assistant with experience at two Division I institutions is a tremendous asset to our university and basketball program," Kilcullen said. "Mike has recruited successfully in the Southeast and specifically in the state of Florida. That is a real bonus. We are extremely excited about welcoming him on board."

The Hickory, N.C., native earned his bachelor's degree in political science from North Carolina State University in 1997. Summey's basketball career began at N.C. State as a member of the managerial staff and as a film coordinator. From 1996-99, he directed and organized six student managers for coach Herb Sendek's teams, while coordinating N.C. State's video needs from 1994-96. While at N.C. State, Summey also coached the 15 & Under AAU Triangle Thunder.

At UNF, Summey's duties will include recruiting, academic progress monitoring and day-to-day administrative duties, in addition to on-floor coaching responsibilities.

Candelino, whose athletic career included three years of minor league baseball and four years playing college basketball, worked last year as an assistant baseball coach at The Bolles School in Jacksonville.

After being drafted in the fourth round of the 1985 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Montreal Expos, Candelino played two seasons for the Expos as a center fielder before his trade to the Mets organization. He began his college basketball career at Marquette, where he played two seasons, before finishing at St. Peter's in 1991, when the Peacocks won the Metro Atlantic Athletics Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

"We are very excited about Anthony joining our program," Kilcullen said. "I am familiar with Anthony from when I was an assistant coach at Notre Dame and he was a player at Marquette. He has helped out with numerous high school programs in this city, and wants to take a step into college basketball. We welcome him with open arms."
