Campbell Names Dr. Debbie Snell Associate A.D. for Compliance and Academic Services

Date Posted: 9/6/2006

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Campbell University Director of Athletics Stan Williamson has announced the hiring of Dr. Debbie Snell as Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Academic Services.

A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Snell comes to Campbell from Palm Beach Atlantic University, where she most recently served as Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator and Compliance Coordinator. She replaces Ed Pasque, who served in the position since September of 2003.

Snell will oversee the compliance of NCAA rules, including supervision of the recruiting, eligibility, and financial aid arrangements for student-athletes.

”We are pleased to have Dr. Debbie Snell join our staff at Campbell,” said Williamson. “We believe her experience as a former student-athlete, coach, teacher, and administrator will be a great asset to our athletic programs and to the university as a whole. We have found Debbie to be a hard working, intelligent person of strong personal integrity. Debbie and her family will be great additions to the Buies Creek community.”

In addition, Snell will head up the Campbell student-athlete support program. This program was created to help student-athletes with a variety of issues, from personal and educational development to addressing personal and social problems that the Division I student-athlete might encounter.

The Student-Athlete Support Program offers assistance through several types of services, including the Individual Study Plan, tutorial sessions, study halls, one-on-one academic advising, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and NCAA Life Skills.

“I’m excited to work with the student-athletes,” said Snell. “I hope to be able to build a bridge between athletes and coaches, as well as between the academic side and the administrative athletic side at Campbell.”

Snell understands how each of the aforementioned parties feels. At Palm Beach Atlantic University, she spent three years as a physical education professor and women’s basketball coach before becoming the Co-Coordinator of Physical Education and Athletic Training. Before coming to Campbell, Snell was Palm Beach Atlantic’s Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator and Compliance Coordinator.

Snell has over 15 years experience as a coach, from the junior high level on up through a Division II university. While she primarily coached basketball, she also has led volleyball and track teams.

“Because I was a coach myself, it helps me to see the point of view of the coaches. I have an empathy for where coaches are; I understand their struggles as well as their triumphs,” said Snell. “At the same time, I understand the academic side and how important it is. I want to be able to help both sides work in harmony to create the perfect situation for the student-athletes.”

While obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in physical education at the University of Arkansas, Snell played collegiate basketball. From the same university, she earned her Master’s degree in kinesiology and a Doctorate in higher education management.

Snell went on to teach physical education and health in several high and junior high schools in Arkansas. She served as the Department Head for Education and Wellness at Northwest Arkansas Community College before beginning her career at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Snell and her husband John are parents of two sons, Kyle (12) and Dillon (14), and one daughter, Calandra Gibson (25).
