A-Sun Hosts Annual SAAC Meeting

MACON, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun Conference hosted its annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Meeting in Johnson City, Tenn. on September 26-27. Representatives from all 11 A-Sun institutions participated in the gathering held on the campus of the ETSU.

The student-athletes conducted business relating to the governing of the conference SAAC while committing to leading activities on their own campuses. The group re-affirmed their commitment to a fundraising challenge between each individual SAAC with a specific local charity benefiting from the competition. Mercer garnered recognition as the winner of the 2007-08 fundraising competition and received a plaque from A-Sun representatives.

Officers for the 2008-09 school year were confirmed with Jacksonville's Danielle Gray (Women's Basketball) serving both as chair of the committee and the conference's voice on the National SAAC. Joining Gray as officers are Vice Chair Katie Martin of Kennesaw State (Women's Basketball) and Secretary Jessica Lokeinsky of Stetson (Softball).

The highlight of the event was the SAAC's community service project, a Fall Carnival at the ETSU Memorial Center. All SAAC members participated and spent time with 80 to 100 foster children and their families in association with the Tennessee Department of Children and Family Services. The athletes and children played carnival games and ate lunch together.

The next SAAC meeting will be held January 23-24, 2009 at the Atlanta Airport Westin.
