Paoliello Helps Bruins Past Samford

MACON, Ga. - Joao Paoliello helped the Belmont Bruins to a win last week with victories in both doubles and singles play. On Wednesday, the junior earned the first Player of the Week honor of his career the conference office announced.

Paoliello helped the Bruins to their lone win of the week, a 4-3 road victory over former conference rival Samford last Saturday. He beat Brian Dushock at the #1 position 6-2, 6-1. In doubles, Joao and partner Rodrigo Amaral beat Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds 8-2.

Edgar Rodriguez, USC Upstate (Bogota, Colombia – Fr. – Business Administration) – Down 5-3 in the No. 3 doubles tiebreaker, freshman Edgar Rodriguez and partner Jack Roux turned the momentum around, tying the match at five on a close line call and then Rodriguez slammed a high lob pass to the turf behind the tennis cages, helping the pair to an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker to take the split-decision doubles point and help propel Upstate to a 7-0 win over crosstown rival Wofford on Thursday ... Down 7-5, Roux and Rodriguez fought back by winning three straight games before the Wofford pair tied the match at eight, setting up the Spartans' dramatic win in the tiebreaker ... Rodriguez started the singles off by posting a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Stuart Robertson to give Upstate a 2-0 lead.
