MACON, Ga. – The UNF men’s tennis squad stunned 29th-ranked South Alabama last week, thanks in large part to Eduardo Pereira’s play at No. 1 singles. Pereira dropped just one game in his straight set victory, and the Ospreys 4-3 upset win powered them into the national rankings for the first time as a Division I institution. On Friday, the senior added one more first to the list, as the conference office named him Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Pereira has won six straight matches in singles (4-0 in dual play) and is 13-3 this season. He is 3-1 in doubles during the dual season (1-1 last week) and 7-4 overall. The Brazilian continued his hot streak to open the 2008 season last week, posting a 2-0 mark, including a win at No. 1 singles against South Alabama's Marek Sramek (6-1, 6-0) and also won at No. 1 a day later against Troy's Benjamin Chomette. The Ospreys earned the program's first national ranking since moving to Division I when they moved into the No. 68 spot this week.
