Dolphins’ Runeman, Spartans’ Regna Earn A-Sun Awards
|

MACON, Ga. - Jacksonville’s Stefan Runeman netted two goals for the Dolphins in an upset of No. 26 College of Charleston to earn Player of the Week honors. Pat Regna guided USC Upstate to second in the conference standings by posting a 0.91 goals-against average over the weekend and leading the Spartans to a pair of victories to claim the Defensive Player of the Week honor, the conference office announced on Monday.
Runeman, a senior midfielder, scored two goals in Jacksonville’s 5-3 comeback win against No. 26 College of Charleston to close out the JU/Nike Invitational. The Jonsered, Sweden native, scored the game-tyining goal less than five minutes into the second half. Runeman, a Physical Education major, added the game-winning goal in the 85th minute on a pass from junior forward Nedim Hrustic.
Regna performed amazingly this week in goal, leading USC Upstate to two wins with dazzling saves. He single-handedly kept Upstate from losing the game at Presbyterian. He began the week with seven saves, five in the first half, and limited Georgia Southern to just one goal on a penalty kick to secure the 3-1 win versus the Eagles. Despite playing in a downpour and his gloves soaking wet, he made five saves in the game which saved the game for Upstate. His saves required extraordinary effort to keep the ball out of the net, one jumping to barely deflect the ball from going into the upper left 90, a combination save where he dove to his right to save a shot, then got to his knees and lunged to his left to save the rebound. In overtime, he made a pair of diving saves from point blank range (within eight yards) to save game-winning goals, eventually leading to Upstate's 2-1 win. He finished the game with a career-high 12 saves.

He came up huge for the Spartans in the 2-1 double overtime win at Presbyterian Saturday. He scored both goals in the victory, notching the game-tying goal in the 77th minute of play.
