The Stetson men’s soccer team entered this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll at No. 6 in the south region. This is the highest ranking for the Hatters in the history of the NSCAA poll. They moved ahead of fellow A-Sun school Campbell. The Camels are No. 9 in the poll for the second straight week.
The Hatters achieved their ranking due to a current three-match win streak that has included road victories over Central Florida (2-1), Clemson University (2-1), and Wofford College (3-1). Stetson is currently 4-2-0 on the season heading into Thursday’s A-Sun Conference opener against Mercer University at the Stetson Soccer Complex (7:00 p.m.).
The last time Stetson was mentioned in the NSCAA poll was September 28, 2004 when the Hatters were listed as “Others Receiving Votes”. Prior to 2007 the only time Stetson has been ranked in the Regional Top-10 was 1999 when they reached #10 twice. They were tied for 10th on September 6 and held the spot alone on September 20. In the first five weeks of 1999 the team was either 10th or received votes before falling out of the rankings.
Campbell remained No. 9 following a week in which the Camels split two matches. Against nationally-ranked Virginia the Camels dropped a tough 2-1 decision only to rebound with a 2-1 win in double overtime against UNC Asheville.
The NSCAA/Adidas Regional Rankings are announced each Tuesday at noon central time. The NSCAA has been responsible for maintaining the collegiate soccer rankings since 1996 when it took over the duty from the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America (ISAA).
