Belmont
The Stetson men’s soccer team played one non-conference game last week and will
play another this week to tune up for the A-Sun Conference Championship Tournament.
On Saturday Stetson held a 2-1 advantage over Winthrop University heading into
the final minute when the Eagles scored a heart-breaker to send the game into
overtime. It was the fourth consecutive overtime game for the Hatters. Unlike
last week when senior Tanner Wolfe ended both extended games with golden goals,
Stetson and Winthrop played to a 2-2 tie. The Hatter goals were scored by freshman
Eugene Starikov (6) and junior Kirk Labusch (5). This week Stetson completes
its regular season by hosting Georgia Southern on Tuesday, and then goes on
to host the A-Sun tournament November 14-17.
Campbell
The Camels close the regular season with home matches against UNC Greensboro
Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) and High Point Saturday (4:00 p.m.) before next week’s
A-Sun Championship at DeLand, Fla. CU and UNCG are long-time rivals; the teams
squared off in both the 1992 and 1993 Big South finals before CU left the league
for the Atlantic Sun Conference and UNCG joined the Southern Conference. Campbell
stands 4-0-1 in its last 5 games against High Point, but 2 of those matches
have gone into overtime and each of the five has been decided by 2 or fewer
goals. Camels Top Tar Heels in Chapel Hill: Richard Jata set up the first goal
and scored the game-winner and Campbell defeated North Carolina 2-1 last Wednesday
at Chapel Hill. The Camels entered the game ranked 10th in the South Region,
while the Tar Heels were 3rd in the South poll. CU improved to 10-4-2 on the
year, gaining its first road win against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent
since a 6-3 victory at Maryland in 1993. Campbell also improved to 10-0-0 in
games when Jata scores since the start of the 2006 season. CU’s 2-1 victory
was the first-ever for the Camels in Chapel Hill. UNC won the first nine meetings
between the schools at home, dating to the 1963 season, Campbell’s first year
of varsity men’s soccer. Victories over UNC in 2006 and 2007 marked the first
time in the 21-match series that Campbell has won back-to-back games against
the Tar Heels. CU defeated North Carolina previously during the 1964, 1981,
1988 and 2006 seasons. .
Mercer
Senior Vicente Arze completed his Mercer career with his name firmly engraved
in the record books. He is seventh all-time in goals with 22, second all-time
with 19 assists and his 63 points are good for sixth position. The Bears finished
their season with a pair of tough non-conference losses last week. The dropped
their match at No. 14 Virginia, 4-0, and lost to Western Kentucky, 5-1, to close
out the home slate.
USC
Upstate
USC Upstate ended its first season in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference
Saturday night at Presbyterian, taking a hard 2-1 loss at the hands of the Blue
Hose. The Spartans finish the season with a 3-14-0 record, finishing in a tie
for eighth with Gardner-Webb in the A-Sun standings with nine points. Upstate
claimed a 2-1 victory over G-W during the season. Upstate caught fire early
in conference play, winning three straight league games to improve to 3-2-0
with nine points to stand in a tie for fourth. However, the Spartans lost their
last four conference games to fall to 3-6-0 in the league. Still, Upstate had
some highlights on the year with Troy Simon and Jason McCabe being named the
A-Sun Player and Defensive Player of the Week following the Spartans’ wins over
Lipscomb and Belmont.
