DELAND, Fla. – Seeds held as top-seeded Stetson defeated fifth-seeded Jacksonville 2-1 on Friday in the semi-finals of the Atlantic Sun Championship sponsored by Bealls Outlets. The Hatters advance to the finals with a chance to defend their tournament title at home.
Tough defense from both teams kept shots at a minimum in the first half. Only one shot was registered on goal for the first 45 minutes, which resulted in a Stetson goal.
In the 39th minute of play, first team all-conference selection Tanner Wolfe netted the goal for the Hatters off a free kick from 30 yards out.
Down 1-0 going into the second half, Jacksonville answered with a goal off a free kick. First team all-conference pick Anton Axelsson sailed in a low free kick from 20 yards back.
Tied at one all, the Dolphins made every effort to pull ahead, peppering Stetson’s defense with shots.
Stetson silenced Jacksonville’s efforts in the 70th minute when Kevin Munz scored the Hatters’ second goal of the night.
With the win, the Hatters maintained a 13-game unbeaten streak versus A-Sun opponents. During the streak, Stetson is 9-0-3 including three tournament wins in last season’s conference championship.
The Hatters advances to the championship game where they will defend their conference title against second seeded Gardner-Webb. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
