BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The College of Charleston spoiled Campbell University’s bid for an undefeated and untied men’s soccer home record Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory at Eakes Athletic Complex.
Charleston (10-8-1) scored three times on just six shots to hand Campbell (9-6-2) its first loss in seven outings overall and its initial setback at home this season. Campbell finished its home schedule with an 8-1-0 mark in its attempt to equal the perfect 9-0 home field records set by the 1970 and 1993 squads.
Casey Gold, Stephen Nagy and Doug Edwards scored for the Cougars, who saw an early lead slip away in the 38th minute, only to jump ahead again just 19 seconds later.
Campbell, which was 5-0-1 in its previous six outings, held a 15-6 edge in shots, but only a 7-5 advantage in attempts on target.
The Cougars went in front on a counter attack in the 13th minute when Gold’s left-footed shot outside the box beat Camel keeper Aaron Johnson inside the left post. The deficit was Campbell’s first at home since the season opener on Aug. 26 vs. UNC Wilmington.
Campbell equalized at the 37:52 mark when freshman Vince Petrasso controlled the ball at the top of the area and his right-footed shot found the net.
