BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs ended their exhibition play in great fashion on Saturday afternoon, playing the preseason #5 nationally ranked UNC Tar Heels to a 1-1 tie. In the second period, the Bulldogs evened up the score in the 64th minute when senior Carlton Hughes placed a beautiful lob pass over the UNC defense, hitting a streaking Chris Salvaggione at the top of the box. Salvaggione then put the shot past the UNC keeper and just inside the front left post.
The exhibition game at Varsity Field proved to be a physical one as a total of 34 fouls were called between the two teams.
UNC, the preseason ACC favorites, struck early as Corey Ashe broke through the defense and scored the ‘Heels lone goal of the game at the 8:44 mark of the first period.
The rest of the first half proved to be a stalemate as both teams failed to capitalize on the offensive side of the ball, as UNC took a 1-0 lead into the half.
