Date Posted: 9/26/2005
Macon, Ga. – Sonny Guadarrama and Aaron Johnson of Campbell earned Atlantic Sun Conference men’s soccer Player of the Week honors as announced by the league office on September 26.
The duo played key roles in Campbell’s upset of No. 25 UNC Wilmington on September 24. Guadarrama scored the game’s only goal in the second overtime to help earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. The freshman midfielder dribbled through three UNCW defenders at the top of the box before lofting the ball up and over a charging goalkeeper to secure the Camels victory. The goal was his fourth of the season and second game-winner while also marking the fourth straight game with a point for the US. U-18 National Team member. Guadarrama is majoring in Sports Management in Buies Creek.
Johnson remained unbeaten in his four starts this season (3-0-1) and recorded his first career shutout versus the Seahawks. The freshman made five saves and lowered his goals against average to 0.91 for the season on his way to being tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. The St. Charles, Mo., native came up with a big save late in regulation to help send the match into overtime where the Camels would claim the win. Johnson is majoring in Government at Campbell.
The victory was Campbell’s second in as many chances against a nationally ranked opponent this year. Campbell, off to their best start since 1995, returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Florida to face Jacksonville in both teams’ Atlantic Sun Conference opener. The POTW nod is the first for both players and the second and third time that a freshman has been honored as such this season.
