BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Scott Phillips scored in the 77th minute and Campbell defeated No. 23 Davidson 2-1 in men’s soccer action Tuesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The victory marked Campbell’s first over a nationally-ranked Division I opponent since 1988 and extended the Fighting Camels’ win streak to three matches. Prior to Tuesday’s triumph over the Wildcats, who were ranked 23rd in this week’s Soccer America poll, Campbell had lost 21-straight to nationally-rated teams since defeating then number-10 Duke on Oct. 5, 1988.
Sophomore Willy Guadarrama ran his scoring streak to three outings when he tallied his Atlantic Sun Conference-leading seventh goal of the year in the first half.
Phillips, a junior reserve midfielder/defender from Sanford, N.C., scored the second goal of his career in as many matches, set up by the Guadarrama brothers.
"That’s a very good team we played tonight," said fourth-year Campbell head coach Doug Hess of Davidson. "They are very disciplined and move the ball well, a couple of things we’re trying to get our guys to do."
