MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference honored USC Upstate's Gilbert Kemboi as the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Kemboi, a Sociology major, highlighted the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team with a 3.545 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as a senior sociology major with the Spartans. He competed in three events in the 2013 A-Sun Indoor Championship, taking home two golds and a silver to lead all track athletes with 28 points.

The Spartan has won five Scholar Athlete honors in an A-Sun sport in the two-year existence of the award.

The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams in the 2011-12 academic year to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative GPA or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.

• Became the second A-Sun student-athlete to be crowned four-time indoor champion in a single event with his performance in the 5000m
• Time of 14:41.56 in the 5000m broke a meet record that he had set in 2012
• Claimed his third A-Sun title and second-straight in the 3,000-meter, crossing the line in 8:25.95
• Took home silver in the mile with a time of 4:18.06
