Golfers Named to ESPN The Magazine All-Academic
|

MACON, Ga. - Belmont senior Danny Amundson and Mercer senior Bill Jones III earned spots on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second teams for their accomplishments on and off the golf course.
Jones made Mercer golf history this season when he became the first golfer to qualify for the NCAA regionals, where he fired a solid one-over 214 (71-73-70). Jones played a vital role in helping Mercer men’s golf continue its astounding turnaround, leading Mercer to the program’s highest-ever national ranking (86th) and its best conference finish (third) since 1992. Playing in every tournament and sporting a team-low 73.77 scoring average, Jones earned three top-five, four top-ten and five top-20 finishes for the Orange and Black this season.
Jones rang up an impressive 3.82 GPA in his business major to land a spot on the at-large team. The award means that Mercer men’s golf has now had a player earn an Academic All-District spot in each of the last four seasons. Andrew An was a first-team recipient in 2008 and a second team recipient in both 2006 and 2007.
Amundson, the native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota was named to the University Division Spring At-Large Second Team after posting a 3.75 grade point average (GPA). He graduated last week from Belmont with a degree in Finance. During the 2008-2009 season, Amundson led the team in scoring with a 73.7 average and posted three top-10 and five top-20 finishes. His best finish was a third place showing at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate last month where he helped lead the Bruins to the team championship. Amundson also ranked fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference in the Golfstat rankings.
For his career, Danny finished with a scoring average of 74.5, which ranks fourth all-time in Belmont's Division I era. He also posted six top-10 and 13 top-20 finishes. He also earned Academic All-Conference honors three times and was named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar Team last summer.
Amundson becomes just the second BU golfer in the school's Division I era to earn Academic All-District honors, joining Jon Webb, who was honored during the 2000-2001 season. He is also the fourth Belmont athlete this year to earn this honor, joining Brett Parker, Cat Mundy, and Andy Wicke.
