BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell used some local knowledge to jump out to the first-round lead at the Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship from The Creek Course at Keith Hills Country Club.

The top four Camels all carded sub-par rounds, led by a pair of three-under, 69s, from freshman Vaita Guillaume and senior Isak Pettersen. The scores matched the collegiate lows for both players. Matt Moot followed with a two-under, 70 and Mitch Gray also tied his low round as a Camel, shooting a one-under, 71.

Only two strokes separate the subsequent five schools, led by UNF, the defending champion at even par, 288. Jeff Dennis led the way for the Ospreys with a two-under, 70. Jordan Gibb and Chris Kennedy, two other returnees from the 2008 team, both shot even par. Kennesaw State and Belmont stand one stroke behind UNF at one-over, 289. Belmont’s Scott O’Brien shot the low round of the day, a five-under, 67, that featured six birdies against a lone bogey on Monday, his 22nd birthday.

One shot further back, in a tie for fifth, sits Jacksonville, and in its first A-Sun Championship, FGCU. The five Eagles all shot between 71 and 74. Daniel Mazziotta posted the lone under-par round on the team with a 71. Joshua Kinsey’s three-under, 69 led the way for the Dolphins. USC Upstate, the other school making its debut at the Championship, finished day one in seventh place at six-over, 294. Josh Gallman recovered from a double-bogey start with five birdies to card a three-under, 69.

ETSU, the conference’s top ranked program, No. 30 according to GolfStat.com, struggled in the first round to an eighth-place showing. Rhys Enoch, who sat three-over after three holes, made four birdies on the closing nine holes in finishing with a two-under, 70. He finished as the lone Buccaneer among the top 13 individuals.

Mercer ended the first round in ninth place followed by Stetson and Lipscomb. The Bears’ Matt Tribby registered the lone eagle of the round, making a three on par-5 18th hole, his ninth hole of the round.

Second-round action begins at 8:00 a.m. with Belmont’s Danny Amundson, FGCU’s Brandon Pena and Jacksonville’s Christian Martin teeing off on the first hole with Stetson’s Sam Ryder and Lipscomb’s Brandon Mundie beginning on the 10th hole. Fans can follow the action at GolfStat.com.
