DeLAND, Fla. - At the 2007 Hatter Fall Classic hosted by Stetson, the FGCU men’s golf squad had four golfers finish in the top-five and took the team title in the final tournament of the fall season.
The 54-hole event was played on the 6,007 yard Par 72 Victoria Hills Country Club layout. The teams played 36 holes on Monday (Nov. 5) and a final 18 on Tuesday (Nov. 6).
The Eagles recorded a composite team score of 880, 25 strokes ahead of second place Bethune-Cookman, during the tournament’s 54 holes.
Daniel Mazziotta was the Eagles' top finisher in the two-day event when he turned in a two-over 218 (+2) which placed him in 2nd overall. He shot a 71 in the second round of the tourney.
Robert Taylor came in second on FGCU's scorecard with a three-round total of 221 (+5) which tied him for third individually. His best round of the event was a 73 on Monday’s second round.
Kyle Henderson and Michael Hart both recorded scores of 222 (+6), placing them T-4th. Alister Munro rounded out FGCU's card with a 227 (+11), which placed him in a tie for 12th. Munro’s best round of 73 took place in Monday’s second round, while Hart (71) and Henderson (73) saved their best rounds for Tuesday’s round.
USC Upstate men's golfer and Gaffney native Josh Gallman fired a 4-under-par 68 to win the individual title by six strokes at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Victoria Hills Country Club.
Gallman has won two individual championships this year. He shot a 10-under total to win the Sea Trail Intercollegiate in September. He also finished second at the season-opening Rutgers Invitational and was the catalyst for Upstate's second-place finish in the NCAA Division II National Championships in May. He was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Golfer of the Month for September, becoming the first Upstate student-athlete to earn a conference honor from the A-Sun.
Gallman entered Tuesday's final round with a one stroke lead over Florida Gulf Coast's Daniel Mazziotta. However, as Mazziotta and the other players floundered in the final round, Gallman did not. He turned in his second straight sub-70 round of the tournament to finish with a 54-hole total of 212 (-4). He was one of just two players to shoot below 71 Tuesday.
Despite Gallman's heroics, Upstate could not improve on its position and finished fourth out of nine teams with a 907 total. The Spartans finished just two strokes out of second place and one out of third. Upstate shot a 298 Tuesday to match its effort in the first round.
Michael Lawrence rebounded with a 74 Tuesday to help the Spartans to the fourth-place finish. He and teammates Baxter Culler and Jamie Lightsey finished in a tie for 24th with 233 totals. Culler shot a 78 Tuesday, while Lightsey equaled the effort with a 78 of his own. Jeffery Horton shot an 83 for a 54-hole total of 239 to finish tied for 32nd.
