MACON, Ga. – It’s hard to match the start Josh Gallman has recorded this fall for USC Upstate. In two tournaments he has a win and a second-place finish to his credit. Now he can add the honor of being the first USC Upstate student-athlete to win an A-Sun award, as Gallman was named the Atlantic Sun men’s Golfer of the Month, as announced by the conference office on Friday.
He opened the season with a 1-under-par (69-69-74=212) performance at the Rutgers Invitational finishing second behind teammate Michael Lawrence. Their 1-2 finish, combined with the rest of the team’s strong play, earned Upstate the team tournament championship with a 3-over-par total and a 15-stroke victory in the 18-team event.
Josh followed up his second-place finish at Rutgers by firing a 10-under score to win the Sea Trail Intercollegiate by a stroke. He had to birdie his final hole to claim the outright title and to finish with a school record 54-hole total of 206. He opened the tournament with back-to-back 68 scores and a 2-under 70 in the final round to capture the individual title
Gallman, who helped lead Upstate to a second-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships as a freshman in May, has competed in six rounds in two tournaments this fall. He has carded an average of 69.7 per round in leading the Spartans to a team championship and a fifth-place finish (Sea Trail) in their first two tournaments playing on the Division I level.
