Waverly, Ga. – ETSU, the 17th-ranked team in the nation, proved they
were the best at The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove during the 2007 Atlantic Sun
Men’s Golf Championship as the Buccaneers claimed their first conference
title. The Bucs were powered by freshman Seamus Power who claimed medalist honors
with a 210 (-3), two strokes ahead of North Florida’s Michael O’Neal.
Power, currently ranked 70th in the nation, bested the nation’s fourth
best golfer and teammate Rhys Davies along with fellow Buccaneer Gareth Shaw,
ranked 47th in the nation. All three finished in the top six as Davies finished
in a third-place tie and Shaw finished in a sixth-place tie.
The Buccaneers led the entire way, following a round one disqualification to
a UNF player, and finished with a 14-stroke lead over the Ospreys.
North Florida finished the event in second place for the third consecutive
year. In 2005 the Ospreys finished four strokes behind Georgia State and in
2006 they finished five strokes behind Jacksonville.
The Dolphins were in the hunt following the first round, but gradually fell
of pace in the last two rounds and finished in fourth place behind ETSU, UNF,
and Campbell.
Two-time defending individual medalist, Duncan Stewart from Jacksonville, shot
a 224 and finished the event in eleventh place.
With the win, ETSU accepts the Atlantic Sun’s automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament.
